An idea can sound perfectly convincing in a meeting and become surprisingly difficult the moment you try to write it down. Everyone agrees on the direction. The presentation looks good, the references make sense, and there\u2019s a general feeling that something interesting is taking shape. Then someone asks for a sentence that explains it. Suddenly, the idea that seemed so obvious is much harder to pin down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I like that moment. There\u2019s usually more to discover. Writing doesn\u2019t just communicate an idea. Sometimes it helps you work out what the idea is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A gallery preparing an exhibition about everyday objects might start with design, memory and material culture. All relevant subjects, but broad enough to describe dozens of exhibitions. As the conversation develops, it becomes clear that the curators are less interested in how these objects were designed than in what happens to them after years of use. That distinction changes the story. It gives the exhibition a point of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When I\u2019m working through a project, I often write several versions of the same thought before deciding which direction feels right. One might bring out an emotional connection, another might focus on a practical benefit, and a third might reveal something nobody had considered. Seeing those possibilities side by side makes the differences easier to discuss. Writing becomes a way of testing the thinking rather than simply presenting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes the most useful thing a sentence can do is reveal what hasn\u2019t been decided yet. A vague promise, an assumption nobody has questioned, two competing ideas trying to occupy the same space. I\u2019d rather discover those things while the words are still moving around on the page.
